Myrtle Beach Ovarian Cancer Talcum Powder Injury Attorney
Talcum Powder has been in the news lately, and not for good reasons. Ovarian cancer has been linked to Talc fibers commonly found in Johnson and Johnson’s Shower to Shower products. A jury recently awarded a verdict of $72 million dollars to the family of a woman who died because of her ovarian cancer. Talcum Powder has been used for several decades by women, and Talc’s link to Ovarian Cancer poses a serious threat to long term users. Below are some general frequently asked questions to try and better understand these claims.
How Does Talcum Powder cause Ovarian Cancer?
Talc has been shown to migrate from the vaginal area up the Fallopian tubes and into the ovaries. Talc Fibers are actually present in the ovaries.
How Do I know if Talc caused my Ovarian Cancer?
We evaluate the potential cases by requesting the pathology reports from your treating physician. These tissue samples are usually kept for 10 years. We get those samples to a lab to scan the samples under a scanning electron microscope. If the talc fibers are present, you may have a claim. If your tissue samples are unavailable, you unfortunately will not have a case, as you have the burden of proof. We will also need habit testimony from your family to show proof of use.
What Did J&J do?
Through discovery in previous cases, Johnson & Johnson first knew of this issue in 1972. The company’s own consultants warned the company of the potential issues with Talcum Powder. In 1992 J&J actually used racial targeting in their marketing as sales were slipping on their talcum powder products. The company began targeting African American and Hispanic Women because talcum powder usage was highest in those demographics.
What to do Today if You were Exposed?
Stop use! It has been estimated that 10% of all Ovarian Cancer is talcum Powder related. That’s 25,000 cases a year and 15,000 deaths a year.
