An aggressive and rare form of cancer, mesothelioma affects the tissue surrounding the lungs, heart, and other organs of the body. Asbestos, a mineral fiber widely used in construction and other industries until the health risks were well known, is the most common cause. We’ve developed an eBook that will guide you through these complex cases.
Mesothelioma is characterized by shortness of breath, chest pain, coughing, and trouble swallowing. It takes several decades for these symptoms to appear, making them difficult to detect early on. The disease can spread to other parts of the body and cause additional symptoms as it progresses.
Mesothelioma can be classified into three types:
- Most cases of mesothelioma are called pleural mesothelioma and they affect the tissue surrounding the lungs, causing symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, and persistent coughing.
- In about 20% of cases, peritoneal mesothelioma affects the tissue surrounding the abdomen and can cause abdominal pain, swelling, and nausea.
- Only 5% of patients with mesothelioma develop pericardial mesothelioma, which affects the tissue that surrounds the heart and can cause chest pain, palpitations, and breathing difficulties.
