To date, GM has recalled more than 9.4 million cars due to faulty ignition switches. The defective product causes the key to move from the “on” position to the “off” position resulting in:

  • Stalling in Operation
  • Loss of Brakes
  • Loss of Power Steering
  • Failure of the Airbags
  • Failure of the restraint system and seat belts

This can happen when a car goes over a hard bump, or if the steering column or ignition switch is suddenly jilted or jarred, or if the weight of the key ring is significant from several keys and causes the ignition switch to loosen over time.

When this happens the driver has no control of the car and is likely to be involved in an accident that may also involve other vehicles. The airbags fail to deploy and the occupants of the car may suffer serious, if not fatal, injuries.

It has been reported that the defective portion of the ignition switch costs less than one dollar to replace. GM knew there were problems with the switches as early as 2004, but did nothing. GM has admitted that at least 13 people have died due to the defective switches. It is estimated that more than 300 deaths and countless serious injuries are connected to the resulting failure of airbag deployment due to the defective ignition switch. Class action litigation is ongoing in several districts.
