Exercise caution with products containing plastic wheel hubs
As manufacturers continue to try and save money on products by switching from metal to plastic parts, the risk is shifted to the end user. Since 2001, at least 8 consumer products and almost 1.5 million units have been recalled because of this danger. The top 5 seen:
- Hand Trucks
- Wheelbarrows
- Big Red Wagons
- Snow Throwers
- Boat Carts
The problem reveals itself when the consumer tries to inflate the wheels with an air compressor. The plastic wheel hubs, unlike the metal parts of the past, are prone to explode with the force of a handgun when the pressure is applied from the air compressor. These products are not adequately tested for weaknesses that would cause the failures, thus resulting in personal injury. Common injuries for these types of cases are:
- Dismembered Fingers
- Permanent Eye Damage or Blindness
- Lacerations to the body
- Fractured Teeth
