Uber Insurance

Insurance Tiers for Uber Drivers

Uber Insurance may come into play if you are involved in an accident while either a passenger in an Uber vehicle or if you are struck by an Uber operated car.  If you are an Uber driver, it is essential to know the different types of insurance coverage that Uber will provide to you if you are injured in an accident. This coverage differs depending on whether you are currently on a ride or are waiting to accept a fare from a customer.

Tiers of Uber Insurance

Tier One

Any time you list yourself as available to pick up customers but have not accepted a ride or picked a rider up, Uber offers $50,000 in secondary insurance coverage to pay for bodily injury that may occur during an accident. This is considered secondary coverage because Uber expects your personal automobile insurance policy to be the primary source of insurance coverage.

Obtaining coverage through your insurance company may not be as easy as it seems, however. If you are an Uber driver, then your personal insurance company might not claim liability for your accident, since you were using your vehicle as a “for-hire” vehicle. It’s important to speak with your insurance company before you start driving for Uber, if possible, to clear up any exclusions that your policy may dictate with regard to ridesharing vehicles. If you are an Uber driver and have not spoken to your insurance company about their coverage rules, be sure to contact your company as soon as possible so that you don’t have to find this information out for the first time after an accident.

Tier Two

The second tier of Uber insurance coverage kicks in when a fare has been accepted and you are either on the way to pick up a customer or already have a customer in your vehicle. Under these two circumstances, Uber will cover up to $1 million in injury and damages if you are in an accident. This policy also covers up to $1 million in uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage in the event the other driver either doesn’t have insurance or doesn’t have insurance that is sufficient to pay the damages incurred in your accident. This is an important coverage to have in the event that you are involved in a hit-and-run accident, as hit-and-run accidents are covered by uninsured motorist coverage.
